(Fast forward to 2011: Almost everybody has a cell phone, and long distance is a freebie.) But the theory back then was that more phone companies would be better for consumers than fewer phone companies.
I knew what happened in the years since: New phone companies did spring up, but an endless parade of mergers led to much of the original AT&T merger being reconstructed into two behemoths: AT&T (which is really the descendant of Southwestern Bell) and Verizon (once Bell Atlantic).

Apple's “Find My i Phone” is one good one and many security apps, such as AVG Mobilation, can track down a phone in seconds. Is there any chance your boss or spouse could be spying on everything you do on your phone? Spy apps are plentiful and can imperceptibly track text and e-mail messages, location, Web sites you visit, who you call and what photos and videos you shoot.
I’ve had both services in the past and haven’t really had any complaints about either.
I was looking for a pretty basic plan, nothing too fancy. It’s only been a couple days but I am pretty pleased so far and would recommend my local Verizon store over the local AT&T store.
I am a little bit of a gadget junkie so a cool phone was mildly important. Maybe they vary from city to city but the customer service and tech support at the store I visited was far superior to anything I have received from AT&T. AT&T announced today that it’s agreed to acquire T-Mobile US from Deutsche Telekom, a merger which, if completed, will make it by far the country’s biggest wireless phone company.
It’ll also leave us with three national carriers: AT&T, archrival Verizon Wireless, and the much smaller Sprint.
The problem is these apps are difficult to detect and run invisibly in the background.
